The famous operating system Microsoft Windows XP will say goodbye very soon. It is already confirmed by the Microsoft about a year ago that XP will be going off the market from Jan 2008 but some more months are granted to XP to finally say bye. There are protests and petition against Microsoft by Windows XP users against stopping the production of this software. The users want that Microsoft should not cancel it and provide updates for it as long as possible. But may be it is not what the big PC Company has in mind. They have to popular their Vista and for that XP have to go. Windows XP after June 30 will no longer be available so do its updates and security patches from Microsoft.
This big cancellation drama has worried current XP users that what all this will cause them. Actually the direct answer is that Microsoft will not make any more new XP to buy and Desktops and Laptops will stop coming preinstalled with XP. You can see that Vista has already captured enough part of the preinstalled OS market. XP users will continue to use this software because cancellation in production will not cancel you licence to use this and nor this OS can be taken off from you PC. But complications can start after some time. IT Companies will stop making software, security patches, downloads and updates for the old dated Operating System. Then your XP may be not support the new hardware and its drivers may be not available for this OS too. New machines can also cause problem to install XP on them like a new laptop that came with Vista pre installed can cause hardware and functions incompatibility if user install XP on it.
Microsoft will continue to deliver XP to the cheap desktop and laptop manufacturing companies whom new target is to acquire the cheap PC market. It is simple because these cheap machines can not support high demand of hardware from Vista, so Microsoft have to give an option from there side for these machines. Otherwise Linux and others can take over.
| 2008 | WinXP | W2000 | Win98 | Vista | W2003 | Linux | Mac |
| March | 72.6% | 3.7% | 1.1% | 8.4% | 1.9% | 3.9% | 4.4% |
| February | 72.3% | 4.0% | 1.0% | 7.6% | 1.8% | 3.8% | 4.3% |
| January | 73.6% | 4.0% | 0.8% | 7.3% | 1.9% | 3.6% | 4.4% |
The above chart shows that the Windows XP is the most popular OS and the Windows family itself capture 90% of the operating system market as monitored by W3 Schools. Product activation will be available after the 30th June off course and so do the left over XP CDs in the stores but no new one. Microsoft Windows Update is already stopped on 14th April. So it’s better that you play with XP more safely and concern on data backup and safety. We will sure miss the simple and effective OS we have ever seen from Microsoft. It’s time to say goodbye to Windows XP and say Hi to Vista.
