
The all new Linux based operating system Ubuntu 8.04 has officially released today, with lots of new features and longer support. This is the second release of Ubuntu from the company to offer 3 year support on desktops and 5 years on servers. This new version of the OS is code named Hardy Heron and will run on Linux Kernal version 2.6.24.3.
For the technical details, this release of the Ubuntu operating system comes with latest version GNOME 2.22, which is very popular open source desktop environment. This will also include the new and virtual file system abstraction layer and PolicyKit 0.7, a secure privilege elevation system which is safer then the old Anachronistic Gksudo system. New OS will also feature active directory support with iSCSI, KVM functionality and with very easy to use yet effective Firewall. Ubuntu 8.04 will come with Wubi, which is windows based installer. This will make it possible for Linux and Windows to live on same HDD partition.
Now some non technical and friendly things about the OS. Ubuntu will provide open office for your work needs like word editor and spreadsheets etc. Other features for media lovers will include a Sound Recorder, Sound Juicer to play audio Cds, Brasero to burn VCDs and DVDs, Totem the multi file format video and audio player, Rhythmbox the FM and sound player software and much more. If you can’t live without internet then Ubuntu can be your perfect companion. Firefox for browsing, Evolution for emails, Pidgin for IM, Ekiga for VoIP, Vinagre for remote desktop viewing, Transmission for Bit Torrent and many more are the included set of software’s for different internet and communication use.
For image and graphic work you will have F Spot the photo manager and Gimp for editing with Xsane for scan-copy-fax needs. That’s not all; this OS also includes all needed accessories like calculator to disk analyzer, password manger to dictionary, everything is there.
