Internet Spam gets 30 Years Old

By Siddharth Gaur | May 1, 2008

Internet SpamFed up with internet spam flooding your email inbox and giving you offers and news’s that you never wanted. Well I have it enough of Drugs, Viagra, Online vacations, Internet Lottery and many more blah blah blah.

When we receive a Spam we just click on the Spam or Delete button and that’s all. But do you know that this ugly internet thing is 30 years old. I am sorry to say but yes, this month it will be. First ever spam is sent by email in USA on 3rd May 1978 on Arpanet (that time internet) to more than 200 people, who never wanted it.

The first ever spammer was Gary Thuerk, a DEC marketer who thought Arpanet users would find it informative and should be interested that DEC had integrated Arpanet protocol support directly into the new DEC-20 and TOPS-20 OS. His email message can be read on templetons.com, it’s a must read. You will surprise to see that time email technology. There was no .com and Internet so email address was like computer names. I think he never knew what he is just starting, but his intention was not that offensive as today’s spammers.

Millions of online spams are sent daily in which lottery and winning are most. Many newbie’s on email and internet or unknown to this scam reveals their financial secrets to these spammers and then there is nothing more to do than see your money go!

You can stop spam by spreading and do some damage. Whenever you got an email you think is from an unknown source or looks like spam, delete or report it. Don’t just open it to lets see what spammer has written. By opening spam email you notify spammers that this email address is valid. Don’t disclose your email address in web groups and on internet. You can also opt for someone [at] example [.] com method to write email addresses on web, so bad spiders – crawlers cant read it. Be wise; be safe that’s the simple rule for online protection.

And yeah, no cake and gifts this time for the anniversary! Of course who wants to give one? Its enough that we are attending it.

It was funny that you took the time to find the first spammer. Gary Thuerk, I wonder if he is rich, I bet he is, definitely going to hell lol. Lighting up, just delete it!
