Each and every day use of wireless technology is increasing and internet is a part of it. WiFi is the medium for wireless internet that can be easily installed in your home, office or any place you want. WiFi just takes input of your internet through regular wires and transmit the internet data through signals in a selected area with WiFi signals wirelessly. These signals can be accessed thorough you WiFi enabled Laptops, Desktops and even Mobiles by WLAN.
Let’s understand how to make your WiFi network more secure then ever. Do you know that more than 50% of WiFi users are insecure and are under threat of a security attack! May be your home or office WiFi signals can be hacked and accessed anywhere, may be in your neighbour’s home. Accessing your bank or important data over the internet is in itself risky and we use precautions for it. But after all the precautions, using an insecure WiFi network in itself can create a danger.
- First enable Encryption on your Access Point. Log in to your WiFi router administration address, you can get more info on this in the user manual. Then change your encryption to 128-bit and your Encryption Scheme from WEP to WPA or WPA 2 or both.
- Change the default password for your router login. Default passwords are more insecure because anyone with some basic knowledge can trace it out. Change the default with a new stronger password and memorise it.
- Change your SSID; this is the name that gets displayed as your network name. Example if you have a DeLink access point then default SSID will be DeLink. You should change it to your own and unique one or you can entirely turn it off. This will protect your network from being traced by its model or manufacturer and its unique settings system.
- Something more difficult is filtering devices by their MAC Address. Each computer or mobile have its own MAC address if it is WiFi supported. You can filter your own devices by giving their MAC address in your router MAC settings. First pair them up with the router by making a connection. Than select their MAC address to be given permission to access the network and other will not be allowed to gain access.
- When using wireless networking, disable Files and Folder sharing so your data cannot be accessed in the network. Update your router firmware regularly if there are any updates available. Always understand and use your user manual for the device when working with these tips to know everything more easily and what you are doing.
There are many more security tips out there, but these are the main and most used ones that can be easily implanted in your system. Try them now and be safe on Wireless Networking or Internet then you are today.
